he Department of Agriculture – Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR) under the Special Area for Agricultural Development (SAAD) Program Phase 2 in Region XI proudly announced the distribution of Php 3.6 million worth of livelihood interventions during the ceremonial turnover in Davao Occidental. The activity took place on February 26, 2024, in the municipality of Jose Abad Santos, and continued on February 28-29, 2024, in Malita and Don Marcelino.

During the activity, a total of fifteen (15) wooden motorized bancas, fully equipped with accessories and fishing gear, were formally handed over to six(6) chosen associations. The recipient associations are VFA (Victory Fisherfolk Association), NAMANCA (Nagkahiusang Mananagat sa Culaman), NAGMABMA (Nagkahiusang Mananagat sa Barangay Mana), MFA (Maliada Fisherfolk Association), CLASS (Cabilon II Laborers Association), and UNISFA (United Small Fisherfolk Association).

These associations received the complete livelihood package tailored to their preferences from the results of the Beneficiary Needs Assessment (BNA). This initiative aims to improve the local fisheries sector and enhance livelihood opportunities. The distribution of motorized bancas, along with the provision of essential accessories and fishing gear, is expected to enhance the efficiency and productivity of the SAAD Program Phase 2 beneficiaries.

Expressing about the significance of the initiative, Elisa E. Pil, Assistant Focal of DA-BFAR SAAD Region XI, emphasized the program’s commitment to enhancing economic opportunities and improving the livelihoods of marginalized communities in the region. She highlighted the importance of sustainable livelihood interventions in developing communities to become self-sufficient and resilient amidst challenges.

“We look forward not only to this form of intervention but also to your improvement and ability to engage in other sustainable income-generating ventures in the forthcoming years, aligning with the SAAD goal of enhancing your economic opportunities and livelihoods” Pil said.

The ceremonial turnover was attended by key stakeholders, including the Provincial Agriculture Office (PAGRO) and local government representatives, who expressed their gratitude for the support and acknowledged the positive impact this initiative will have on the livelihoods and overall development of the fishing communities.
