DA-BFAR XI turned over Php 30 million check to the Municipality of Braulio E. Dujali, Davao del Norte, through Mayor Atty. Leah Marie Moral-Romano on November 6, 2023, for the construction of a legislated freshwater hatchery in compliance with Republic Act No. 11777.

BFAR XI OIC Regional Director Relly B. Garcia said that the project is a government priority aimed at enhancing food security by meeting local requirements for aquaculture seed stocks and reducing dependence on imported fry, ultimately increasing fish production in Davao Region.

According to Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) production data for April to June 2023, Davao Region achieved a fish sufficiency level of 50.22%, equivalent to 21,312.24 MT. This represents a growth of 5.62% compared to the first quarter of 2023 when it was at 44.60% (19,135.42 MT).

With the establishment of the hatchery, DA-BFAR XI aims to further increase fish production in the coming months.

“The hatchery will also be beneficial to creating employment, generating more revenue for the local government unit, and reducing poverty,” Garcia said.

Mayor Romano expressed gratitude to DA-BFAR and pledged their full support for project implementation and hands-on monitoring.

In his turnover speech, Garcia emphasized the importance of interagency collaboration and a whole-of-nation approach in project implementation to ensure successful execution and sustainability.

“I encourage everyone to support the fishery sector in attaining food security for the country,” Garcia said.
