n a step towards enhancing the fisheries sector, DA-BFAR XI OIC Regional Director Relly B. Garcia, along with Provincial Fishery Officer for Davao Oriental Jefferson Montera, paid a courtesy call to Davao Oriental Provincial Governor Niño Sotero L. Uy, Jr. on Thursday, November 9, 2023.

During the visit, Dir. Garcia engaged in discussions with Gov. Uy focused on intensifying law enforcement operations, involving various law enforcement agencies aimed at combatting illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing. This follows the recent joint operations in the Municipality of San Isidro, resulting in the apprehension of two (2) commercial fishing vessels.

Dir. Garcia reaffirmed DA-BFAR XI’s continued support for the sustainable fisheries development of the province. He expressed commitment to preparing for upcoming projects in Davao Oriental that align with the government’s vision for food security and poverty reduction.

Among the livelihood projects scheduled for distribution in Davao Oriental this November are three (3) units of Norwegian Fish Cages, 32 units of bamboo rafts for the culture of Mussels and Oysters, and the Lantangan Project.

This initiative aims to provide livelihood support to fisherfolk associations in the city/municipalities of Davao Oriental, contributing to increasing fisheries production in the region.

Dir. Garcia and Gov. Uy also exchanged views on the latest developments in fisheries management areas (FMA), a science-based policy aimed at sustaining marine resources. Regions VIII, XI, and XIII benefit from this shared commitment under FMA 02, with DA-BFAR XI serving as the lead region.

Other topics discussed included updates on agri-fisheries loans, the fisheries scholarship program, and Norwegian Fish Cages in Mariculture Park, Baso Brgy. Badas, Mati City.
