An underwater clean-up dive along the reefs of Mansud, Sta. Cruz, Talicud Island, and Brgy. Limao in the Island Garden City of Samal (IGaCoS), Davao del Norte, was conducted on September 21 in line with the 2023 International Coastal Cleanup celebration and 60th Fish Conservation Week.

The activity aims to clean the reefs by collecting non-biodegradable debris that has settled underwater and minimizing the presence of crown-of-thorns starfish, locally known as “Dap-ag,” as its outbreaks pose a threat to coral reefs and lead to a decline in coral cover.

During the clean-up, participating divers pulled plastic bags, drinks, and cans, among others, totaling 45 kgs, including Dap-ag. Collected wastes were turned over to LGU IGaCoS for proper disposal.

The activity was organized by BFAR XI in collaboration with the Local Government Unit of the IGaCoS City Agriculture Office – Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Management Division, and Bantay-dagat of Brgy. Sta. Cruz, Talicud Island, IGaCoS.

The activity was done as part of the mandate of the Bureau to protect, conserve, and manage our fisheries and marine resources.
