A composite team of 18 individuals from the City Agriculture Office of Tagum, City Environment and Natural Resources Office, Civil Security Unit and Philippine National Police-Tagum completed the Basic Fishery Law Enforcement Course for Deputized Fish Wardens conducted by BFAR XI from Sept 27 to 29, 2023 at the Provincial Fishery Office of Davao del Norte in Apokon, Tagum City.

This training aimed to equip participants with the necessary knowledge, technical skills, and updates on fishery laws to strengthen marine conservation efforts. Participants engaged in sea apprehension simulation activities, identification, and addressing issues such as fish caught by explosives and other illegal fishing practices.

The Bantay Dagat program is a community-based law enforcement initiative that engages fisherfolk in coastal communities. Their mission includes detecting and enforcing measures against illegal fishing activities within the coastal waters, extending up to 15 kilometers from the shore, and assisting in rescue operations when necessary.

The newly equipped Bantay Dagat members are now better prepared to tackle the challenges of illegal fishing and uphold the principles of responsible fishing practices.
