“Isip usa ka inahan mas natun-an nako na dili diay nato kinahanglan i criticize atong mga anak kung unsa iyang kinatawo, kinahanglan diay nila atong pagsabot og suporta.” (As a mother, I realized that we don’t actually need to criticize our children’s gender preference; what they truly need is our understanding and support.”) Sheryl Roma, a participant, shared her insight, during the training.

The BFAR XI Gender and Development Focal Point System (GFPS) conducted a GAD Training for Fisherfolk on July 21 in Tagum City, Davao del Norte, with active participation from fisherfolk representing various associations in the province.

The primary objective of the training was to promote gender equality, challenge stereotypes, and foster inclusivity within local communities.

The training covered various topics, including an Introduction to Gender and Development (GAD) emphasizing the difference between sex and gender, Gender and Human Sexuality, Gender Stereotypes, Gender Equality, and Gender Sensitivity in the Community. Participants actively engaged in open and constructive discussions, sharing their thoughts and experiences related to these issues.

Sharon Baidiango, the GAD Focal Person of BFAR XI, emphasized the importance of disseminating the knowledge gained during the training to families and communities.

“Ang atong natun-an i-share nato sa atong pamilya ug community,” (“Let us share what we have learned with our family and community.”) she said.

This activity marks the second GAD-related training for fisherfolk organized by the BFAR XI GFPS in 2023. BFAR XI remains committed to empowering fisherfolk leaders with knowledge and understanding of gender-related matters, contributing to a more inclusive and equitable fisheries industry.
