DAVAO CITY—The Municipality of Lupon emerged as the regional winner in the 2019 Malinis at Masaganang Karagatan (MMK): National Search for Outstanding Coastal Community.
The Municipality of Lupon was awarded today during the regional opening program of the 57th Fish Conservation Week. They received Php 2,000,000 worth of fisheries and livelihood programs.
MMK is the National Search for the Country’s Most Outstanding Coastal Community. It is the government's approach in promoting the protection and conservation of the country's coastal and marine resources by incentivizing coastal communities with outstanding coastal resource management initiatives.
Every year, participants from coastal communities across the country are evaluated based on these criteria: No illegal fishing; Observance of Off-fishing season; Declared Marine Protected Areas; Clean, coastal waters without any garbage or industrial effluence flowing to the sea; and Effective mangrove protection and rehabilitation program.
Usec. Eduardo Gongona paid tribute to the winner and also to all the participating cities and municipalities which supported this annual search.
“We should remain resolute in protecting our fishery resources. The bountiful harvest and high income of our fisherfolk primarily depend on the health of the seas,” Usec. Gongona said.
The undersecretary also encouraged all BFAR XI employees and BFAR partner agencies to not falter in this time of the pandemic. (IEC)
