The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) XI today launched its annual 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women (VAW). The event, held at the BFAR XI Regional Office, aims to raise awareness and promote collective action to address this pressing issue.
Aligned with Proclamation No. 1172 s. 2006, the campaign runs from November 25 to December 12. This year’s theme, “UNiTEd for a VAW-Free Philippines: VAW Bigyang Wakas, Ngayon na ang Oras!,” underscores the importance of unity in eliminating VAW.
BFAR XI Regional Director, Relly B. Garcia, in his welcome remarks, emphasized the significance of the campaign and encouraged everyone to actively participate in promoting gender equality and safety. “Let us stand as defenders of the rights of women and children. The time to act is now,” Dir. Garcia said.
To empower its workforce, BFAR XI through its Gender and Development Focal Point System (GFPS) conducted a one-day Seminar on Effective Prevention and Response to VAW. Resource speakers from the Davao City Police Office, including PMAJ Gillian Rose A. Birondo, Chief of the Women and Children Protection Desk, discussed various aspects of VAW. Patrolman Maynard A. Lawas demonstrated basic self-defense skills and techniques.
Atty. Joanna Karla P. Guilonsod, OIC of the BFAR XI Legal Unit, provided insights into legal responses to VAW. Participants also engaged in a workshop and games facilitated by Ms. Shane Denise A. Fulgueras, Legal Staff.
Sharing her takeaways from the seminar, Ms. Juna Mae C. Benitez, expressed gratitude for the knowledge gained. “Thank you, BFAR XI management, for this seminar. It reminded us that we can be victims or bridges to help others. Let’s respect one another because we don’t know everyone’s journey. Regardless of societal circumstances, let us respect one another,” Benitez said.
Continuing its GAD initiatives, the GFPS also organized a free eye checkup service in partnership with the CJCEyesite Optical Clinic.
As part of its commitment to gender equality and child welfare, BFAR XI also formally opened its Gender and Development Office and Child-Minding Center. These initiatives demonstrate the agency’s dedication to creating a safe and inclusive workplace.
By organizing this campaign and providing relevant training, BFAR XI strives to create a culture of respect, empathy, and understanding. The agency is committed to working with communities and stakeholders to build a VAW-free Philippines.
