BFAR XI recognized Mati City as the Regional Winner of the Malinis at Masaganang Karagatan (MMK) National Search for Outstanding Coastal Community in 2022, presenting a commendable Php 2 million prize for their exemplary fisheries conservation efforts.
The turnover ceremony was held on Thursday, June 20, 2024 at Mati Fishport in Barangay Central during the Panaghugpong sa mga Mag-uuma og Mananagat. The event was witnessed by Mati City’s fisherfolk leaders and key government officials.
The LGU City of Mati has announced that the award will be allocated towards artificial reef production projects to increase the biodiversity of fish and provide coastal protection. By creating artificial reefs, fisherfolk can benefit from enhanced fish catches, and production activities, and the protection of their communities and fishing grounds.
Hon. Samuel Rodriguez, Mati City Councilor and Committee Chair on Agriculture, emphasized the city’s dedication to protecting and preserving its marine resources through regular meetings with the BFARMC (fisherfolk council) to address concerns and ensure the sustainable management and protection of coastal areas.
The evaluation process was conducted by the MMK Regional Technical Search Committee (RTSC) composed of BFAR XI, DA XI, DILG XI, PCG XI, and DENR XI. The RTSC evaluated the participating local government units (LGUs) based on the following criteria: 1. Prohibition of illegal fishing; 2. Observance of closed fishing season; 3.
