BFAR XI’s Gender and Development (GAD) Training is making waves in the fishing industry, particularly for women.

In a recent session organized by the BFAR XI Gender and Development Focal Point System (GFPS), fisherfolk women in Mati City, Davao Oriental, participated in a GAD Training on July 19, 2024.

Sharon Baidiango, the BFAR XI GAD focal, emphasized the crucial role of women in sustainable development. She highlighted that the lack of recognition for women’s contributions hampers progress, leading to increased poverty and food insecurity.

The training, attended by 30 participants, covered topics such as GAD Basic Concepts, Gender and Human Sexuality, Gender Roles and Stereotypes, Gender Equality and Sensitivity in Fishing Community. Through interactive workshops and discussions led by GFPS, women acquired valuable insights and skills.

“Nagpasalamat ko kay daghan na kong nahibaw-an kabahin sa gender and development nga akong ma-apply sa akong pamilya ug i-share sa akong mga silingan. Labi na ang mga rights sa kababaihan. (Translation: I am grateful for the new knowledge on gender and development that I can apply to my family and share with my neighbors, especially regarding women’s rights),” Christina Panchito, a participant, shared her insights.

BFAR XI remains dedicated to promoting gender equality and encouraging women’s active participation in fisheries. Through targeted GAD initiatives in cities/municipalities across Davao Region, BFAR XI aims to cultivate a more inclusive and sustainable fishing industry that benefits all stakeholders.
