In a bid to bolster its workforce’s capabilities, the BFAR XI Fisheries Management Regulatory and Enforcement Division (FMRED) – Licensing Unit conducted a two-day Training on Commercial Fishing Vessel and Gear Inspection from July 18-19, 2024 in Davao City.
The activity aimed to equip 16 BFAR XI personnel from FMRED and City/Provincial Fisheries Office with advanced skills and knowledge necessary for effective monitoring and regulating fishing vessel and gear, aligning with FAO 198-1, s. 2018 guidelines.
During the training, a series of presentations and lectures on the technical and operational requirements were conducted, including: FAO 198-1, s. 2018 on the Registration and Licensing of Commercial Fishing Vessels, Fishing Gears and Fishworkers; and FAO 266 s. 2020 on the Implementation of Vessel Monitoring Measures (VMM) and Electronic Reporting System (ERS) for Commercial Philippine Flagged Fishing Vessels. Additionally, Engr. Renan Abejuela from Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) conducted a lecture on Boat Tonnage Measurements.
The second day of the training involved practical application, where the trainees conducted inspections on fishing vessels and gears at Davao Fish Port Complex, Daliao, Toril, Davao City. They gained hands-on experience inspecting different types of vessels like Light Boats, Catcher Vessels, and Carrier Vessels. This hands-on approach not only reinforced theoretical knowledge but also emphasized the practical application, crucial for effective monitoring and regulation of fishing vessels and gear.
Overall, this training initiative is expected to have a positive impact on BFAR XI and its stakeholders. By equipping their personnel with improved inspection skills and capabilities, BFAR XI demonstrates its commitment to fulfilling its mandate effectively.
